Cavoglave - Thomson Concert

We get up at around 8am, pack a few things that we need for our day trip to Cavoglave. We have a quick breakfast then off we go. We leave Pag around 10.30am and have a good 2 1/2 hour drive ahead of us. It's a funny kind of day today. The weather is warm and the temperature is predicated for a 37 degree day.

Today is a public holiday in Croatia which is a memorial to its War of Independence, celebrated on 5th August each year.  On that date in 1995 the Croatian Army took the city of Knin during Operation Storm, which brought an end to the Republic of Serbian Krajina, a self-proclaimed Serb entity in Croatia.
The main celebration is centered in Knin where there are festivities commemorating the event, beginning with a mass and laying of wreaths in honor of those who died in the war, and continuing with parades and concerts. The event in Cavoglave is a concert Marko 'Thompson' Perkovic has organised to celebrate the day by providing a free concert with some fellow well known Croation musicians.  The event is attended by thousands of people and starts around 10am with a mass and concludes in the early hours of the morning.  Thompson as he is widely known is a well loved musician to Croatians all over the world and has a massive following.  His music is generally about Religion, Family and his beloved homeland, Croatia and was a blazing torch of hope through his music during the war in the early 90s.  He has a massive following and in excess of 50,000 people are expected to attend throughout the day to this free event in a town which is with all due respect in the middle of nowhere about 50mins inland from Sibenik and about 40kms south of Knin and is also his birthplace adding to the significance and emotion of the day.  He was actually in the armed forces and involved in defending his birthplace.

Here we are today, driving through some of the villages that had been affected, during the war. We could see some of the damaged/bombed homes, still standing in the form that they were destroyed a decade or so ago. It was a little earry and very emotional to still see so many damaged homes and villages. However it was refreshing to see all the new homes that have been built in these villages, side by side to the ones that have been destroyed, and these people stand proud, with almost every home, displaying the Croatian flag, flying high and mighty. It really was a proud sight to see, especially today.

On our drive into Cavoglave, we stopped at a little town called Drnis, about 20 minutes drive away, found accommodation at the only hotel in the area called Hotel Park. We were lucky we got there when we did as we got the last room available. The hotel was lovely and better than we expected. We freshened up and then off we were to the festival/concert.

This was an experience on it's own. People from the homes are lining the streets along the road toward Cavoglave, greeting people coming to the festival. The track/road up to the venue, was all uphill and bumper to bumper traffic, car after car. One lane for cars and the other lane for motor-cycles. We could not believe the number of motor-cycles, let alone the number of bikers. Didn't realise that Croatia had so many bikers. This was bizaar.  Also nearly every car had Croatian flags sticking out the window, flying high and proud. Great to see. The other thing was that the streets were also lined with police to elimanate any trouble.  It took us around 45 minutes to get up the hill and into the car park - one big open rocky field.

Then we still had a good 20 minute walk to the festival, in 37 degree heat, with a cool breeze. This was saving the day. It is now around 6pm. In we get to the festival grounds and it all starts. Rows and rows of food stalls, whole lambs/pigs being cooked on spits, stalls with other foods, drinks, merchandise, accessories, etc... everywhere.

Once you get through the rows of stalls, it's just one big open area, with a church in the middle. A section set up for the concert, a section set up with a stage area that folk dancing groups were performing on and a massive marque with lots and lots of tables/benches set up overlooking the stage area and the open arena for the concert.

As we make our way to the marque we notice people that we know from Melbourne. Not just 1 or 2, but a whole group of people. We make our way across and are amazed at jusy how many people there are from Melbourne. So we join in and sit with them all. There is so many that they take up at least 5 tables. Everyone here is pumped and having a ball.

The concert started at 9.30pm.  First performance was Mate Bulic, then followed a new up and coming Croatian band called Opca Opasnost and then around 11pm Thompson came on. What a buzz. Everyone erupted when he started. The mood was awesome.  Croatian flags were flying high everywhere. Crowds screaming and music blazing. Looking around, there was a crowd of about 50,000 people. It was amazing. Thompson performs and everyone sings along. The atmosphere was fantastic. Around midnight there is a massive explosion of  fireworks, right above our heads. It was fantastic. Emil still up and was loving every moment. We sing and dance along until Emil determines he has had enough.

It around 1.30am, we head back to the car and have a good 20 minute walk ahead of us. We get back to the car and the traffic is out of control. Everyone was leaving and again, bumper to bumper. It is now 2am and Emil has fallen asleep in the back seat of the car. Due to the traffic, Marjan and I decide to wait until the traffic dies down. We had to wait over an hour, before the congestion/traffiic eased off. By the time we get back to out hotel, and in bed it was 4am in the morning. A very long day, but a great day. So glad that we made the effort and came today.

Pag

We wake to another hot morning. It is already in the 30's.
Today we have a relaxing day at the beach. Most of the day is spent down at the beach. The kids play in the water all day and go for rides in Bostjan's boat, while us adults just chill out on the beach and in the water.

We stay down at the beach until 8pm. Back up we go for another quick BBQ, and then another walk along the beach and for another ice-cream.

An early night we have tonight as we have a big day ahead of us tomorrow in Cavaglave for the Thompson - Dan Pobjede concert.

Off to Otok Pag - Island Pag

Up today to a quick breakfast, pack the car, and off around 10.30am to Otok Pag to catch up with Marjan's cousin Bostjan and his family. We have a good 4 hour drive plus a ferry ride to get to Pag. Ferry ride was really quick, about a 5 min ride. The ferry was cool as it took us and our car.

We arrive on Pag and it isn't the prettiest landscape, there are rocks everywhere. Someone said to me that Pag is like walking on the moon. Was not sure what they meant, but now l understand. White rocks, both big and small everywhere. How bazar.

We finally arrive in Gajac which is where his cousin has rented an apartment. We drive down the street and it is really pretty. Tree lined streets and almost the feeling that you are in Port Douglas, just a lot quiter. It is very hot outside. Temperature is 37 degrees.
We get to the apartment and once again are greeted very warmly, with another feast awaiting us. We sit down, eat and drink again, but by this stage very, very little as we are full upto our ears with food. Conversation flowing and it seams as though we were together just last week, it's just like catching up on old times. Emil has hit it off with the kids, Jan and Lucija, no problems here.

We relax a little and then off to the beach we go. It's around 6pm , weather in still hot, around 33 degrees. The walk down to the beach is only 100m, nice and easy. We get down to the beach and it is full of people. The beach is nice but too many rocks, both big and small. However the water is beautiful, crystal clear and refreshing when it is 33 outside.

In go the kids, Emil could not wait, followed by Marjan, Bostjan and Jana. Me, l wet my feet and then relax by the shore with a good book at hand. There is a very slight breeze and l mean slight, but still nice.

We stay down by the water until 8pm and then head back up to the apartment for again another meal. This time a quick BBQ. What a relief.

After dinner we go for a walk down to the local shops, get ice-creams and then down to the beach for a stroll along the water, then back to the apartment to sleep. It's around midnight.
Another great day had by all.

Finally we meet cousin Ivan Sprajc

Today we woke to another warm day, around 32 degrees.  Today we spend the day with Stric and Strina at the house. First thing in the morning the kids go off for a play at the park.

Then on their return striaght down to the river at the bottom of their property. The kids go tyre surfing down the stream. Marjan waiting in the stream to catch the kids so that they don't end up to far. The water is cold, but it doesn't seam to bother the kids, as they just keep going in and out, in and out. Emil and Nusa once again competing with who's faster. They are so cute together. The kids have a ball. In the process of Marjan stopping the kids, mainly Emil from ending up, down stream, manages to loose a thong in the process. Stric and Nusa add to try and find it, however the thong is lost forever.

Later this evening around 7.30pm, Marjan oldest cousin -  Ivan Sprajc comes to Stric and Strina to meet and catch up with us. This is our first time to meet with him as both other times when we were in Slovenia he was in Mexico away for work. Ivan and his wife Silvia - a Mexican, are totally lovely. They both are very warm and extremely talkative. Ivan talks English really good (with an American accent - everyone's english in Europe seems to be slanted towards the American english), however Silvia is very fluent in Slovenian, so a little harder to understand. The boys catch up talking about everything and anything.
Damjana and Tomasz also rock up and we have our own little party. As if we don't have enough food on the table, Stric orders and picks up some pizzas. More drinks, including champagne are brought out. We eat, drink and enjoy.

Another late night. Emil making his own bed out of chairs outside under the pergola, falling asleep under the stars.

Radovljica - Swimming Pool

Today we wake around 10am. It's another warm day and Stric and Strina have the day already planned out for us. Breakfast is waiting for us. We have a quick breakfast while Stric picks up the girls - Teja and Nusa. The temperature outside is already in the 30's.  We are off the the local pools - Radovljica.  We have a quick 15 minute drive and we are there.
In we go, only to find it a lot bigger than we expected. There are 3 big pools all outside. Apparently this is the pools that the Slovenian swimming squad train at. They have all the pictures up everywhere. The pool was good and it wasn't packed. Most people are off on their summer holidays down at the beach. Better for us. We find a shady spot under some trees, drop off our stuff and then in the water we go. Today's temperature is about 30 degrees. The water is cool and a real relief. We swim around a little and cool right down. Emil and Nusa just keep jumping in and out, one after another competing against each other to see who is faster. These 2 are one of a kind.

The kids claimed that they are starving so Strina gets them a pizza.

We stay at the pool until around 3.30pm. We could have stayed longed but Stric and Strina had to go.  We get back home, relax a little then freshen up to go to Damjana's for dinner. They are preparing a BBQ, plus Strina is making her famous Bifstek (raw beef minced very fine with additives and eaten like a patee), our favourite. This we have been waiting for.  However she has made enough for 20 people not just a handful. Out of control. We get to Damjana's eat, drink and have a very enjoyable evening.

The girls and Emil do some singing and dancing performances for us. The girls also love One Direction.

Followed by a harmonica performance from Tomasz, with a quick lesson for Marjan. What a laugh!!

Another late night. We call it a night around 11:30pm.
